# Getting started: signing up and your first conversation

> What happens between the sign-up form and your first Action, including what the trial costs and what is on screen the first time the app opens.

Sign up, start the trial, then talk. There is no wizard, no forms, and nothing to import. You can stop at any point, and Donna keeps where you were for next time.

## Your first few minutes

<Steps>
  <Step title="Sign up and start the trial">
    Signing up goes through the pricing page before the app opens, so you start a trial or subscribe first. The trial runs 14 days and takes a card up front. Nothing is charged until the trial ends, and leaving before then costs nothing. Cancelling, what happens when the trial ends, and where billing lives in settings are covered in the [plan and billing answers](/docs/reference/faq#your-plan-and-billing).
  </Step>

  <Step title="You land on an empty canvas">
    A short welcome is already on the canvas the first time Donna opens, and it ends with one question: what are we working on. Nothing else is there yet. There is no starter [Outcome](/docs/concepts/outcomes) and no starter [Actions](/docs/concepts/actions), and your outcomes, [captures](/docs/concepts/capture), and [start list](/docs/daily/starting-an-action) each show their own empty state until you put something in them.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Just start">
    Type or talk. You do not need a tidy request. "Big week, the report is barely started, and my head is everywhere" is a fine opening.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Donna gets oriented">
    Donna learns from the conversation instead of a form: what kind of week this is, what is weighing on you, why today. It asks at most one question at a time.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Something to work on takes shape">
    Out of that conversation, Donna shapes the first thing. Sometimes that is a single next [Action](/docs/concepts/actions). Sometimes it is a larger [Outcome](/docs/concepts/outcomes) worth tracking, and Donna helps you figure out what "done" looks like.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Connect your calendar">
    Donna offers to connect your calendar during the conversation. Connected, it sizes each step to the time before your next event. See [Connect your calendar](/docs/connections/calendar).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Bring in a document if you have one">
    You can drop a plain-text, Markdown, or HTML file into the bar. Donna reads it, sorts the loose notes into [Capture](/docs/concepts/capture), and offers once to build the one real project in it into a tracked Outcome. PDF and Word files are not supported yet.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The capability map

Until you finish your first real Action, a **What Donna can do** pill sits beside the help control in the bottom-left corner. Open it for the map of what Donna handles: taking what is on your mind, holding loose ends in captures, shaping an Outcome, starting work on something, setting up routines, connecting your apps, and the settings that make Donna yours. Nothing in it is graded and nothing counts down.

Finishing that first Action is what retires the pill. Creating an Outcome does not. The same map stays in the help menu afterwards.

## Saying it instead of typing it

Anywhere you can type to Donna, you can talk instead: hold the mic control, say it, and it lands as text in the bar for you to edit and send. See [Dictation](/docs/channels/voice).
